Audience Research
Here is a print screen of the first 3 questions from the results of my questionnaire. The results have shown that 50% of my respondents didn't purchase a music magazine therefore when producing my magazine I am going to take this into contents and try and make my music magazine different from the reason so maybe I can change the minds of the 50% of people who didn't purchase magazines.
50% of people said that the sections they read mostly where interviews, therefore because of these results I have set myself an aim of having a variety of interviews to choose from within the magazine therefore this will appeal to a wider audience. Also the results have shown that Q magazine is my biggest competition therefore I am going to try and make my magazine unique and different from Q so that people consider purchasing my magazine instead of Q. Also respondents have said that they are most likely to purchase there magazine from a newsagent therefore I am going to promote my magazine at newsagents.
Results have shown that respondents have been split into two different music categorises of 'Indie' and 'Hip-hop' therefore I have taken this into consideration and have decided to use some elements of both genre's therefore my music magazine will appeal to everyone. also results have shown that 50% said that they would purchase magazines if they were cheaper. Therefore when deciding on a price for my magazine I will make it reasonable so that everyone can afford it and will be willing to purchase the magazine.
Mood Board
This is my R&B mood board. I have chosen to do use these music artists because they are associated with R&B music. I have used photographs of the artists and two R&B front cover albums. These artists are:

Media Language
W.O.B - White on black
By-line - To highlight who wrote the article
Caption - explains the photograph used
Masthead - The name of the magazine
Headline - Catchy title for the main article
Puff - Colourful boxes which are usually used to promote things that are in the magazine e.g. free gifts
Cross refrence - states what page the rest of the story continues on
House style - A magazines speific design that distinguishes it from other competitors
Analysis of NME's Double Page Spread
NME have chosen to have the image of Lily Allen spread across the two pages and the rest of the space contains the text and the title. Also the article has a consistent house-style of red, black and white which contrasts with the clothing that the artist is wearing. By doing this they have made the whole article tie together. Also the main headline is a personal quote from the artist herself and the magazine has chosen to chose a theme as if she has cut words from a newspaper, giving the article that dark and gothic feel to it. Also by having the title in different sizes this grabs the readers attention as it is different and stands out, also by using a quote will make audiences want to know why she has said the quote.
The article is white on black through out however they have chosen to use the colour red when stating who the article is about and who written it, this has been done to highlight who has written the article and who the whole article is about if that wasn't clear from the photograph on the right of the text.
The article is then spilt up into small parts and put into 4 columns and the bottom of the main headline and photograph. This makes the reader think that there isn't much text and the article will be quick to read, making audiences more willing to read the article. However the text is slightly squashed comparing to the overlarge image and title, therefore making it seem like the text is less important.
NME have also used a small puff in the left hand cover of the page promoting there website, this is also in red so that it catchs the eye of the reader.
Analysis of Q Front Cover
Kings of Leon are on the front page of the magazine, and also part of the image covers the 'Q' logo. However 'Q' have used there consistent house style.
At the top of the magazine they have used a banner which could be suggested to be a puff. This contains that the magazine includes a free CD of new American music, therefore this will appeal to audiences who like new current music.
'Kings of Leon' is across the middle of the page which is the main headline on the front cover. Here they have used two different types of fonts of Serif font and Son Serif. There is also a puff which states that it is 'world exclusive' this has been used so that fans will know that the article is exclusive.
At the bottom of the front cover they have used another puff which then again includes that the magazine has a free CD. This has a house style of the American flag and also the flag contains to 'Q' logo. They have used this as it is promotion of the magazine. They have also used the code and conventions by having a bar code at the bottom right of the front cover, including the price and the date.
School Magazine Front Cover
I have chosen to design my college magazine plain so that readers will focus on the main story. I have also decided on the house style colours as these are the colours which represent Maghull High School. When photographing I decided on a medium close up, my reason for this being that it shows the models face and due to the article he should be recognised. I also decided on my masthead by drawing around it to make it look child like.

Analysis of NME Double Page Spread
At the bottom of the double page spread there is a time line in the colour blue which consists of the house-style. The time line provides a sort biography of Lana Del Rey's life and the title says 'The Rise of Del Rey' which attracts to reader to read the time line. Also they have used Serif font and Son Serif font which contrasts so this also draws attention to the readers. They have also used photographs on the time line to show how the artist has changed, and they have also tilted some of the images to make it look more modern and show that the artist is young.
The image that has been used is seductive and appeals more for the male audience, therefore this relates to feminist theory of the male gaze. She is wearing red lipstick which is symbolized as being being sexually aggressive. Also the pose she is doing with the position of the bottle has sexual connotations and she is looking directly out to the audience, therefore attracting readers. Also there is an american flag in the background which suggests she's just 'the girl next door', and also shows that she is from America. Also to relate to America there are converse hanging from the back of the chair which she is sitting on.
In the main headline, they have used a quote from Lana herself, this is effective as it will make the reader want to know why she is 'so nervous'. The magazine have also used a consistent house style of the colour blue, they have used this colour so that it contrasts with the American flag, and they have also used blue to highlight Lana's name.
The circle in the center also highlights a quote from the interview, which is designed to interest the reader as Lana states that shes 'been fighting for a long time' therefore this makes the reader want to find out her struggles to become a pop-star. They have also highlighted the circle in blue again so that the reader knows that it is about the artist herself.

Analysis of NME Front Cover
Lana Del Ray is on the front of this cover doing a sexual pose so therefore this attracts to attention of the male audience. The background of the magazine is in the theme of the American flag which represents that she is from America and the colour scheme is the same as the flag.
The magazine also has a puff on the front which states that it features a free poster therefore this is appealing for people to buy as they will receive a free posters with a photos of the Sex Pistols, Nirvana and Bob Marley. This also appeals to a wider audience of the older generation.
The magazine also appeals to a wider audience as there is a new artist on the front of the magazine so this appeals to a younger audience and people who like up coming artists. However the magazine also states that there is other information about older artists such as Sex Pistols, Nirvana, Bob Marley and Noel Gallagher. So therefore this appeals to an older audience.
There is also a banner at the bottom of the magazine which highlights that there are even more music artists featured in the magazine. this once again shows readers that the magazine aims itself at a number of different fans and genres possible.
The artist that is the main feature of the front cover is descried as 'the true face of a modern american icon'. This implies that this artist is seen as quiet an influence and has much respect where she comes from.

Rule of Thirds and Depth of Field
Rule of Thirds
The basic principle behind the rule of thirds is to imagine breaking an image down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically) so that you have 9 parts to the photograph.
The basic principle behind the rule of thirds is to imagine breaking an image down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically) so that you have 9 parts to the photograph.
The theory is that if you place points of interest in the intersections or along the lines that your photo becomes more balanced and will enable a viewer of the image to interact with it more naturally. Studies have shown that when viewing images that people’s eyes usually go to one of the intersection points most naturally rather than the center of the shot – using the rule of thirds works with this natural way of viewing an image rather than working against it.
Depth of Field
Depth of field refers to the range of distance that appears acceptably sharp. It varies depending on camera type, aperture and focusing distance, although print size and viewing distance can also influence our perception of depth of field. This tutorial is designed to give a better intuitive and technical understanding for photography, and provides a depth of field calculator to show how it varies with your camera settings.
Feminist Theory
As a perspective for looking at media texts, feminists would see most media output as being the product of a patriarchal or male dominated order, aimed at objectifying women as sex objects and only placed there for there appearance. Feminism was the response to society's assumptions that women should be subservient to men; until the emergence of feminism women were treated almost as objects, passive agents in a male world.
Here is the front cover of a Q magazine where Lady Gaga is in a seductive pose as she is topless therefore this leads to the assumption that males will purchase this magazine because of the front cover.

Qualitative and Quantitative Research
Qualitative questions generate numberical data or information that can be coverted into numbers. Quantitive research involves open and closed questions e.g yes or no, therefore making it easier for the respondent to answer the questionnaire. The advantages of quantitative questions is that respondents are more likely to fill in the questionnaire as it will not be time consuming as they have to tick yes or no answers. However the disadvantage is that the answers will not be specific therefore the data will be less useful.
Quantitative questions are more in depth questions to gain more information and are more specific to the purpose of the questionnaire. The advantages of these types of questions is that the answers you receive are specific therefore gaining the best possible information. However the disadvantage of qualatitive questions is that it is time consuming for the respondents and they have to think more clearly about the answers they are giving.
What is this work about?
The purpose of this coursework is to create a new music magazine where I will include and design a front cover, contents page and double page spread. I will also use my own photographs to create the front cover and to focus on the artist I have chosen. In order to do this I will distinguish a target audience and then research into potential designs. I am also going to design a questionnaire about music magazines to find out who my target audience is before designing my magazine. Also I will review two music magazine front covers, two contents pages and two double page spreads, this will help me decide on a suitable layout for my own magazine. We have also been asked to create the front page of a college magazine featuring a photograph of a student in a medium close-up shot, plus text and a masthead and a mock-up of a contents page. To do this take I will analyse different college magazines and take points to help me with the production element.
